but stands at the point closest to it.

Children are not symbols of the future,
nor metaphors of possibility.

life that exists here and now.

In this realm,
desire and evaluation have no meaning.

Expressions created for children are not meant to be sold,
but to be entrusted.

They may protect,
but they do not impose expectation.
They may guide,
but they do not bind.

Innocence means
adding nothing.

The Form of Prayer — Jizo

Jizo does not speak of salvation.
It does not present correctness.

It simply
stands,
watches,
and remains.

It does not require belief,
nor seek understanding.

Even without faith,
even without knowledge,
it can be placed.

That is the form of prayer known as Jizo.

A Sense Before Time — Jōmon

Jōmon is not an ideology.
It is not a religion,
nor an idealized past.

Human and nature,
life and death,
the sacred and the ordinary—

it was a time when these were not divided.
A sensory era.

What is referred to here is not a return to history,
but the memory of a human state
before attachment was born.

The Point of Integration — A World Without Attachment

Oiran, children, Jizo, Jōmon.
They do not merge.
They do not become one.

They simply point to the same place.

A world where desire is not denied,
innocence is not used,
and prayer is not institutionalized.

What is shown here is not an ideology,
nor an answer.

It is
a place where one can exist without grasping.

On the Underlying Japanese Beauty

What is meant here by Japanese Beauty
is not style or ornament.

It is a way of being:

not emphasizing,
not insisting,
not rushing toward completion.

The beauty in Jizo lies in not speaking of compassion.

The beauty in Oiran lies in not taking desire.

The beauty in children lies in not burdening them with the future.

The beauty that runs through Jōmon lies in not dividing.

These are all forms of
beauty before meaning,
expression before form.
